Book Summary : An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire.

Arundhati Roy’s ‘an ordinary Person’s Guide to Empire’ (collection of her 14 essays or speeches she delivered in 2003-2004) became the first book, I finished in 2016. Thank you Ujjwal Acharya Dai for the gift. As Promised to Ujjwal dai here’s my summary of the book.
The book is a chilling & eye-opening account of the struggle of people against "empire"(cartel of self-interested corporate organizations & power hungry "pro-development" governments). How the other side of story of this struggle is continuously being repressed by continuous show of empire-side stories by "fair" media lead my same people against whom this resistance is waged in the first place. I felt her political/social writings and speeches are nothing short of illuminating and amazing and I regret reading Arundhati this late, ( I wish I hadn’t ignored her essays ), some of the essays from the book are eye-opener for me.
“The Loneliness of Noam Chomsky” (My favorite essay from the book) is Arundhati’s tribute to one of the world’s greatest and most radical intellectuals, Noam Chomsky, who showed us that nothing is what it seems to be in the free world. He showed us how phrases like "free speech", the "free market" and the "free world" have little, if anything, to do with freedom. And he analyzed the penchant of the United States to commit crimes against humanity in the name of "justice", in the name of "righteousness", in the name of "freedom".
The essay “Peace is War” deals with the importance of the "free media" in the corporate globalization project. She describes how neoliberal capitalists have managed to subvert democracy – by infiltrating the judiciary, the press and the parliament, and molding them to their purpose.
In “Do Turkeys Enjoy Thanksgiving?” she uses the allegory of quaint historic practices - like saving one good turkey and slaughtering millions - to say that there are always a few good turkeys from minority or oppressed groups that get rewarded, while the vast majority are penned and imprisoned. She warns us that the forces against us are too great for any one person, even a charismatic leader, to challenge.
In “Come September” that nationalism was the cause of genocides in the 20th century. Like a surgeon wielding a scalpel, she deftly shreds our most sacred doctrines. "Flags are bits of colored cloth that governments use first to shrink-wrap people's minds and then as ceremonial shrouds to bury the dead."

Roy analyses the power ordinary people like us wield in today’s world in her essay “Public Power in the Age of Empire”. The world today is a deeply skewed reality. She says that both terrorism and the war on terror share the same excruciating logic- they make ordinary citizens pay for the actions of their government.
The scope of Roy’s discussion is broad, the bulk of her evidence weighty, and yet her core messages are never lost from view. Some of the major refrains of this collection have to do with the ever-deteriorating, always illusory ‘free press’ and the need for truly independent media; the need to insist upon and assert a role for non-violent protest and resistance to imperializing projects; and the need to understand – and then denounce – grinding poverty as a form of violence.
Roy pays particular attention to the parallels between globalization in India, the devastation in Iraq, and the deplorable conditions many African Americans, in particular, must still confront.

She examines the role of resistance movements that can make a difference and return dignity to the term democracy. Whether writing about the so-called war on terrorism, the media, AIDS in South Africa, the war in Iraq, or caste politics in India; this passionate author puts before our eyes the cause of justice for the poor, the oppressed, and the overlooked in countries around the world.

“So you believe in it, don’t you? This whole stupid idea of romance, flowers and candlelight dinners and even the ridiculous ‘happily-ever-afters’, you have an unflinching faith in it, admit it! Damn! How did I ever miss it when I looked into your eyes for the first time? Perhaps my vision was clouded too…by this demeanour of yours.” And she pulled her hair back, dextrously letting the rubber band slip from her slim wrist on to her hair held tight in the fist. He felt a sharp pang as he realised its happening now. Something that he has dreaded, rehearsed, dreamt and anticipated for weeks now.

But that was it.

She nodded once more before she got up and left. He felt ridiculous, staring blankly at the crumbs of the orange cake that wrapped themselves around the tines of the fork like desperate rings clinging to thin fingers for the fear of slipping off.

He had least expected this would end in a noisy cafe, so abruptly and callously. She could have timed it better, closed it nicely. He saw it coming in her withdrawals, her reluctant kisses, her drifting eyes and twitching fingers but the last thing love performs is a reality check.

He shifted his gaze to the swing door still waving her a goodbye on his behalf. It creaked open and he saw her re-appear. His heart skipped a beat. He dismissed it, he must be hallucinating. Then he though it must be the gin and tonic or an aching heart playing cruel tricks on him.

Then he felt her hand touch his face, it was actually her. She ran her fingers over every feature, his nose, eyes, lips and the firm chin. He had his eyes closed all the while, only inhaling her perfume and recalling the texture of the skin of her hand.

He opened his eyes and she had her eyes closed too. He saw the fine lines of strain corrupting her perfect facial skin.

She withdrew her hand with a sudden jerk and opened her eyes wide. He felt the brilliance of her intense eyes and the smile that rippled upon the placid surface of her pursed lips.

“Sorry!” she said.

He smiled, “ It’s all right. I’m glad you came back…”

But she had placed her finger upon his lips and he found himself kissing it clumsily.

She spoke, “ Get lost! Just needed to register all details of your face. My sculpting project is bloody half-complete. Can’t afford to start over mid-semester with a new model.” She blew him a kiss as she reached the door.

The crumbs had fallen off the fork, the swing door was creaking again…he felt it had ended just right…before she returned.

The swing-door creaked once more, he turned to look in the other direction…

At 6 am

At 6 am
to be here in the lake
watching light
sketch upon the pitch-dark
with its finest pastels
is to know
how a sea of love
gently swells
against the containing wall
of the ribs
that tells
heart from bone

At 6 am
before the mind cribs
'mean and routine',
before man-sound
and engine grunt
hunt and blunt
the senses
before a city awakens
and a dead-living
commences

At 6.15 am
while I am still
a whiff
beyond 'what if'
a blade of grass
seeking no class
inconsequential
wordless, yet all-well
at 6.30 am
while I am
if at all
I am
a damp-soil sigh
a third eye
with eyelids of joy
oh boy
At 6.50 am
uprooted
I fall
fall...
fall back into the
the falsity of senses
of time and its tenses
fall...free
and captive
from the wing-flap prayer
of four birds that fly
without a care
right off the sky canvas
I fall...into this coarse
crowd of 'us'

Monsoon Musings

Monsoon mornings can be extremely enchanting. The orchestra is in place to awaken your senses with nature’s best-played symphony. The wind tangos with the chimes on the front door. Raindrops make a string of near perfect pearls that decorates your bedroom window. A rain song serenades and cajoles the flora in view into a gentle sway.
The usually fathomless blue sky dons fleeting sheets of Gray and inadvertently breaks into a roaring laughter. The unforgiving summer bids farewell and the forthcoming festive autumn beckons. The two seasons are bridged by the thirst quenching rainy season that we all adore! The celebrations begin as the air brimming with moisture and romance rejuvenates the spirit and body.

Simmering cups of tea and coffee mark the evenings as new aromas emanate from the kitchen. Culinary improvisations involve stuffing the pakodas with almost anything palatable. Even the ‘calories conscious’ throw caution to the wind as maal-puas and jalebis call for sinful indulgence. The drudgery of a typical workday is replaced by the unpredictable excitement of a chaos when a heavy downpour leaves you drenched and stranded. The roads present camouflaged open manholes beneath innocent looking puddles. Parts of the city suffering from reconstruction fall into disarray as a muddy deluge flows all over. But the romance of venturing in the rain with one colourful umbrella for two; feeling the drops of rain on your face like ticklish fingers as you drive a motorbike; splashing in the puddles and rain dancing to the heart’s delight; lending purpose to old newspapers as your paper-boats vie for the Olympic gold; are precious moments that add up to life.

There are days when water logging makes the inadequate and ill-designed sewage systems overflow and choke, delighting children as their aquatic sports take to the streets.Frequent electricity cuts make one wonder if electricity board is diverting supplies to the million volt lightning flashes for both occur almost simultaneously.  Forgoing the reality shows and the latest James Bond flick in favour of some reality check and family bonding can be fun. Blame it on the weather if you find dad in an ultra-cool mood despite a long day.Humidity and love are in the air in equal measures.

Long romantic drives and short excursions to soak in the country greens and fresh air can be refreshing. Or simply laze on a rocking chair, curled up with a book of poetry or fiction with soft music in the background that melds with the pitter-patter of falling raindrops. This season affords many delights if you can make the time. The inflation soaring, the Sensex and water tables dipping but the spirit of joy is insuppressible.
Monsoon weddings and the festival season cometh and delighted shop owners begin to lure customers with sale offers and new stocks. Time to spoil yourself.Shopping spirits are dampened just a bit because the water logging and the mosquitoes bother, as does the foul smelling garbage dump. Time to twitch the nose a bit, curse the authorities for spraying insecticides during peak hours. Time also to pause a bit before tossing the leftover food out of the window. In our cities, the litter belongs to the literati.

The evenings turn magical, pink cotton clouds huddle close bidding the setting sun farewell. The promise of an enchanting evening fills the air. What are your plans when drizzle taps on your window?, shaking a leg at a party, a game of scrabble, catching on family or friends, a long romantic drive? Time fleets and so do the precious moments, savour them all wonderful monsoon and make fragrant memories…

Travelling and photography has been my passion since long. when my colleagues planned the trek to Ghandruk I was the Happiest one because ,I  have been hearing about this trek route and Ghandruk village since my childhood day and I always wanted to be there, this time I made my dream come true with my classmates and had a great time. Tour around Bandipur and Pokhara was bonus for me :)

Trek to Ghandruk provided me a good introduction to trekking  and also offered the breathtaking view of sacred mountain Macchapuchhre (fishtail) and Annapurna south.

Ghandrung, now known as Ghandruk is a typical gurung village of Kaski district. Its a popular and short trek destination of Annapurna region from Pokhara.Ghandruk once was a prime place to recurit British Gurkha and Indian army now is the hub for Annaapurna conservation area project (ACAP). This beautiful village with orderly rows of neat slate-roofed houses which are clustered on the canyon wall amid a complicated network of terraces provides opportunity to observe the life style of local people who are very cooperative.
A wander round it will reveal shops tea houses, local people transporting goods from one village to next , innocent children, small farm houses and their families ,donkeys mules, chicken and many more.
here I present some of my photograph which I captured during my trek to Ghandruk.

your heart

Why let

I am a child

I am a child
and yes!
I will make god tonight
I have had enough
of this tiring flight
of fancy
I want a god
that
I need not show,
one
I need not see
...to just be
religious
oh yes!
I will make god tonight
with all strength
of life
in my pores
she pours,
I am going to
undo yours
that knots
my throat
and rocks
my boat
and make
my very own
like none
you’ve ever known
one who neither
tempts
with an apple
nor
squats
in a temple,
neither slices up nations
nor approves
wars and starvations
one who sits with me
and just loves poetry
oh yes!
I will make god tonight
with all i’ve got
soiled linen,
unwashed dishes,
a greasy pot
with just a pure thought,
a god who loves
the perfections
in
the imperfections
she makes
who can share
half bakes
and burnt steaks
and not demand
higher stakes
whose prayer
is to be eased
into
for she
comes
pre-pleased
and is
fun too
I am a child,
and yes
I will make
god tonight
I have had
enough of
this
dark night!

~ A few inches away~

Giving away
was not easy,
so
did the
next best thing,
left the closet open
everyday
and let
the air scrub
as desperately
as i was trying
but
my shirts
still smell
of intimacy.

I should shift
your
pile of clothes
a few inches
away

My Inspirations

in·spi·ra·tion

/ˌinspəˈrāSHən/
Noun
  1. The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, esp. to do something creative: "flashes of inspiration".
  2. The quality of having been so stimulated, esp. when evident in something: "a moment of inspiration in an otherwise dull display".

This is how the dictionary defines the word INSPIRATION. Inspiration is being in a state of mind where everything is possible, everything is clear, and we feel at one with the universe.
Here are my source of inspirations..

1.Mark Zuckerberg :

Not because he is a Brilliant Nerd or the youngest Billionaire on Earth but because he is a Brilliant nerd who knows the NERVE of Human Beings. He invented an internet platform where any Human activity, previously confined to the Physical world could be replicated, and in some cases, Bettered. So on Facebook there is something for everyone- Lots to waste your time, lots to utilise it. Lots to spend your time in thinking of useless relationships, lots to build Business and Work relationships. Lots to lose your contacts in the real world and lots of new contacts in the virtual world. Zuckerberg has changed the way Humans communicate. In the Nascent stage of Facebook, Mark had remarked, "it is something that we dont yet know about, all that i know is, its Cool! what it will become in the future, I dont know". After being valued at $50 Billion with over 750 million subscribers, the world is divided into two types of people: Those who are on Facebook and those Who Will be.... and yet we dont know the real deal that facebook may become in the future. One thing that remains constant although is the fact that Facebook is still 'Cool' !
